Formal Project Management Professional Certification Programs
have been established by
the following Project Management Associations.
Australian Project Management
The Australian Institute of Project Management has a certification
system based upon the Australian National Competency Standards
for Project Management. This certification system is available
in Australia currently, and will shortly be available everywhere
else.
The AIPM certification is available at three levels - project
team member, project manager and program manager, and requires
individuals to prepare portfolios of evidence showing performance
(i.e. output competence). further information is available through

A booklet has been prepared by the Australian Institute of Project
Management (AIPM) as a guide to its certification program, the
Registered Project Manager Award Program (RegPM). The AIPM RegPM
award is based on the Australian Recognition Framework. The booklet
provides sufficient information about the program to enable an
individual or organization to decide whether to seek these awards.

The
Association for Project Management (UK)
has adopted a seven
(7) stage project management career development program. This
program is formed through a matrix of Career Stage versus Criteria.
The Criteria are Role, Experience, Grades and Qualifications.
The seven Career Stages are:

Team Leader
Junior Project Manager
Project Manager
Senior Project Manager
Project Director

The International Project Management Association (IPMA) has developed
a Four-Level Certification Programme. The main requirements for
each level are:

the
certificated programme director (CPD)
shall have the ability to direct all projects of a programme or
all projects of a company/branch or to manage a complex project
with major partners from different international cultures
-
the
certificated project manager (CPM)
shall
be able to manage complex projects him/herself
-
the
registered project management professional
can
manage non-complex projects him/herself and assist the manager
of a complex project in all fields of project management
-
the
project management Fachman/Fachfrau/practitioner
(PMF)
shall have project management knowledge and may
be applying it on some fields as a specialist

Overview of Project Management Institute
Certification Criteria
The Project Management Institute (PMI
®
) sponsors
a project management certification program. The purpose and goal
of this project management certification program is the development,
maintenance, evaluation, promotion, and administration of a rigorous,
examination-based, professional certification program of the highest
caliber.
The Project Management Professional (PMP
®
) Program
is designed to assess and measure professional knowledge in an
objective manner. PMP Program requirements and eligibility standards
are applied fairly, impartially, and consistently with applicable
laws.
To achieve PMP certification, each candidate
-
must satisfy all requirements for education and experience established by PMI,
and
-
must demonstrate an acceptable and valid level of understanding
and knowledge about project management that is tested by the Project
Management Professional Certification Examination, and
In addition,
those who have been granted the PMP credential must demonstrate a
continuing professional commitment to the field
of project management by satisfying Professional Development Program
requirements.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates applying for certification as a Project Management
Professional must satisfy the requirements for experience and education
for one of the categories described below. The project management
process groups within which a candidate must acquire her or his
experience are listed in this table:

|
Recognizing that a project or phase should begin and committing to do so.

Planning Processes
|
Devising and maintaining a workable scheme to accomplish the business need that
the project was undertaken to address.

Executing Processes
|
Coordinating people and other resources to carry out the plan.

Controlling Processes
|
Ensuring that project objectives are met by monitoring and measuring progress
and taking corrective action when necessary.

|
Closing Processes
|
Formalizing acceptance of the project or phase and bringing it to an orderly
end.
|
Category 1
- At the time of application,
the candidate holds a baccalaureate or equivalent university degree
and has a minimum of 4,500 hours of project management experience
within the five process groups over a minimum of three (3) years.
Experience gained more than six (6) years prior to the application
date will not be considered.
Category 2
- At
the time of application, the candidate does not hold a baccalaureate
or equivalent university degree but holds a high school diploma
or equivalent secondary school credential, and has a minimum of
7,500 hours of project management experience within the five process
groups over a minimum of five (5) years. Experience gained more
than eight (8) years prior to the application date will not be
considered.
Breadth and depth of experience.
- The project work experience must be acquired in all five process groups listed
in the table above. A candidate must report some hours of experience in each.
Starting in September 2005, candidates must document experience in performing
or executing tasks, from a specified list, within the domains or process
areas. The
list contains the tasks which PMI considers to represent project leadership and
direction. The list of tasks is contained in the
2005 PMP Examination
Blueprint
as shown on the
PMI website.
Project management education.
- The candidate must document at least 35 contact hours of specific instruction
in
project management, through courses, workshops, or training sessions.

The handbook contains information on applying and sitting for
